Our Kids Are Great!

The teacher is the one who gets the most out of the lessons, and the true teacher is the learner.

This week I had the pleasure of subbing in one of our 8th grade social studies classes.  It seems that, due to some unforeseen issues, we were short substitutes and a call went out for coverage.  I saw this as a golden opportunity to help out while connecting with our kids at the same time.  This being my first teaching experience with our students, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  What I found was that our kids are awesome!

From the moment I walked in the room, the students were helpful and polite.  They took the time to help me understand the class structures and routines, and there was no shortage of assistance from this thoughtful group. As we dug into the work, I found their contributions to the opening discussion (current events) to be insightful. Our students’ responses took a world-view that let me know that they have engaged in high-level discussion at school in the past.  The students were able to show empathy and true concern about those impacted in the various current events stories.  We then engaged in a discussion about the causes of the Spanish/American War.  The high level of academic understanding coupled with our kids’ ability to see the issue from multiple perspectives was amazing.

While my time in the classroom was short, I learned so much about our students and their school experience.  It also allowed me to begin to build a relationship with the kids, which is an important part of being an instructional leader.  I hope to have the opportunity to interact with our students in this manner in the future.

Dr. Palzet, so glad you were able to spend time with our children this week and thank you for answering the call to sub! Glad you think they are awesome too! One thing you forgot to mention was how amazing their teachers are – which is surely the reason for their insightfulness. Thanks for all your work!

    Hi Kim,

I wish this blog was equipped with a “like button” so I could better declare my agreement with your statement. We do have some amazing teachers that have helped our kids grow and develop so well. Also, are parents aren’t so shabby either… 🙂
