Measure Twice… Cut Once

Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.
~Paul J. Meyer

I have an uncle who is a carpenter, and he has a saying that he uses often: “Measure twice… cut once.”  He uses this saying so often that it has lost much of its meaning.  When I think about the wonderful changes we’re making in our schools, I realized how much my uncle’s words apply.  At both the Elementary and Middle School, we are using new technologies and new teaching methods to improve the student experience.  These technologies and methods are done so only after careful consideration and planning so that we can be sure our efforts are successful.

These new initiatives and methods are being rolled out on a small scale and in a controlled manner.  This piloting approach allows us to identify what works and what does not work for our teachers and students.  It also gives us an experience on which to build if the initiative/program goes system-wide.  Our pilots are accompanied by ample professional development and support for teachers.  Likewise, lines of communication about what is working and what needs to be fixed are kept wide open.  This is  the school version of my uncle’s “Measure twice… cut once” philosophy.

We are carefully listening to what our teachers have to say in order to meet their needs.  Our staff have been wonderful about providing us feedback on how to improve these pilots and fully advocate for their students.  It is this type of careful planning that will ensure that we continue to move our schools from good to great.  Our “measure twice… cut once” approach will ensure a great finished product.

Nice thoughts. It’s always nice when the sun can shine and allow well planted seeds to grow and reach their full potential.
